Dozens of people protested this Friday in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to denounce the increase in insecurity and violence in the country, in addition to remembering the massacre that occurred two years ago in the capital’s La Saline neighborhood.
Between November 13 and 14, 2018, dozens of people were killed, many women raped and others had their homes looted, in a bloody episode that is still being investigated.
The massacre took place under the nose of the National Police, because near the place there is a police station whose troops did not act to arrest the murderers.
This Friday, the United States embassy in Haiti reiterated its request that the case be clarified and those responsible be brought to justice.
“We encourage the Government of Haiti to accelerate and intensify efforts to prosecute the perpetrators of crimes and bring the long-awaited justice,” the legation said on its Facebook account.
The demonstrations have multiplied in recent weeks in Haiti.
Last week, dozens of people demonstrated several times in the streets of Port-au-Prince to demand justice for the rape and murder of young high school student Evelyne Sincère whose body was thrown in the trash.
Cases of rapes, robberies, murders, kidnappings and open warfare between armed groups that act freely, intensify in the capital.
At the end of last August, the president of the Haitian Bar Association, Me Monferrier Dorval, was assassinated by unknown persons in front of his house in the capital sector of Pèlerin, not far from the residence of the Haitian president, Jovenel Moise.
The crime was repudiated by different sectors of the country, who called for massive demonstrations in the streets.
On the other hand, several parties and organizations of the political opposition announced days of protests for November 17 and 18, to reiterate their demand that the Haitian president, Jovenel Moise, leave power under the allegation that he is allegedly involved in cases of corruption.
This week, Moise began a series of visits to several of the country’s leading figures close to the government to explain his political goals, which focus on modifying the Constitution and organizing elections.
